USPS Files Holiday Rate Increase: October 4 Through January 17

The Postal Service announced today that it will raise prices temporarily for the holiday season. Pending review by the Postal Regulatory Commission, the increase takes effect at 12 a.m. Central on October 4 and runs through 12 a.m. on January 17, 2027.

The temporary pricing hits the services DTC brands actually use: Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select, on both retail and commercial rates.

What it costs

USPS frames the change with examples rather than one headline percentage, and the examples show the pattern: light, close packages get a nudge, heavy, far ones get a shove.

  • Retail Priority Mail, zones 1 to 4, up to 3 pounds: up $0.50
  • Retail Priority Mail, zones 5 to 9, 26 to 70 pounds: up $9.10
  • Retail Priority Mail Express, zones 5 to 9, 26 to 70 pounds: up $20.80
  • Commercial Parcel Select, oversized 26 to 70 pounds: up $2.35

Industry coverage pegs the overall average around 6 percent. USPS says the money covers extra handling costs for peak and keeps its pricing in line with competitive practices, which is accurate: FedEx published its peak fees in July, and UPS is expected to follow.

What this means for your brand

USPS running a peak surcharge is no longer news by itself. This is the fourth straight year of temporary holiday pricing. What matters is that all three major carrier networks now charge for the same calendar, so there is no free lane to rotate into. The brands that keep margin in Q4 do it with weight, zone, and rate discipline instead of carrier hopping.

Zone discipline is the quiet one. The USPS examples above make it visible: the zones 5 to 9 increases run many multiples of the zones 1 to 4 increases. Inventory positioned in the middle of the country ships more of its orders in low zones by geometry alone. From our warehouse in central Ohio, 60 percent of the US and Canadian population sits within 600 miles, which is why our clients' holiday surcharge exposure skews toward the small numbers on that list.

Add rate shopping across USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL on every label, at discounts aggregated across all our brands, and peak pricing becomes a line item you manage instead of a season you dread. Get a quote and we will model your actual Q4 exposure.

FAQ

Does the increase apply to commercial rates or just retail?

Both. USPS lists temporary increases for retail and commercial customers across Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select.

Is October 4 final?

The dates and prices are pending Postal Regulatory Commission review, which historically approves these seasonal filings. Plan your Q4 landed costs as if it is final.
