FedEx published its 2027 rate tables on Monday, September 21. Standard list rates for US package services, including exports and imports, go up an average of 5.9% effective January 4, 2027. (FedEx, shipping rate changes)
The rate and surcharge PDFs on fedex.com carry a September 21 last-modified date. A copy of the same page archived on September 6 contained no 2027 figures at all. (Internet Archive, September 6, 2026) This went up this morning.
5.9% will be the headline all week. Budget against the surcharge sheet instead.
The fees on a residential parcel rise faster
Compare the surcharge tables line by line. (FedEx, 2027 changes to surcharges and fees)
The Residential Delivery Charge on FedEx Ground and Home Delivery goes from $6.45 to $6.90 per package. That is 7%.
The Delivery Area Surcharge for residential US package services goes from $6.60 to $7. Extended residential goes from $8.80 to $9.60, a 9.1% jump.
Stack the two the way a real order stacks them. A Ground parcel to a residential address in an extended delivery area carried $15.25 in these fees in 2026. In 2027 it carries $16.50. That is 8.2% on the part of the bill that has nothing to do with the base rate the 5.9% applies to.
Ship 5,000 residential orders a month and the Residential Delivery Charge increase alone adds $2,250 a month. That is $27,000 a year, before a single base rate moves.
Zone-banded fees widen the penalty on distance
Additional Handling is priced by zone, and the bands are spreading.
In 2027, an additional handling charge triggered by dimension costs $31.75 in Zone 2 and $43.75 in Zone 7 and beyond. The gap is $12 per package, up from $11.25 this year.
Oversize does the same thing on a bigger scale. Home Delivery oversize runs $270 in Zone 2 and $355 in Zone 7 and beyond. That spread grew by $10.
If your product is bulky, every zone you add to the average order is worth more to FedEx than it was last year.
Two dates after January 4
On January 18, 2027, FedEx adds a Paper Document Fee of $25 per shipment when a trade document arrives in non-electronic format, plus a Paper Air Waybill Fee of $5 per shipment on US domestic and export shipments started with a manual airbill. The Residential Delivery Charge also extends to qualifying international shipments into the US and Canada on that date. FedEx says the destination country list comes later.
On February 1, 2027, FedEx will change zone classification for select US domestic origin-destination ZIP code pairs.
That second one is the sleeper. Your zone chart is an input to every rate on your contract. Reclassify a ZIP pair and your cost per order moves without a single negotiated discount changing. FedEx is also republishing the Delivery Area Surcharge and Pickup Area Surcharge ZIP lists on January 4, so the map of which addresses carry a surcharge gets redrawn in the same window.
What this means for your brand
You have fifteen weeks until January 4. Four things are worth doing with them.
Pull ninety days of invoices and separate base rate from accessorials. If accessorials run more than a quarter of your parcel spend, the 5.9% headline is not your increase, and you should model the surcharge sheet directly.
Re-run your zone mix off actual shipped orders rather than your rate card. Zone-banded fees reward whoever sits closest to the customer, and that reward got bigger in this sheet.
Measure your boxes before January. Additional handling triggers on dimensions, and a carton that clears the threshold today at $29.50 costs $31.75 in Zone 2 come January. Cartonization work done in October pays for itself twice.
Ask your provider what their 2027 rates look like. A 3PL shipping enough volume to hold carrier discounts absorbs part of a general rate increase. One that rebills you at list does not.
We ship out of Canal Winchester, just outside Columbus. From here, 60% of the US and Canada population sits within 600 miles, and 90% of our customers' orders reach the buyer in two days on ground. That is a zone story, and zone stories got more expensive on Monday. Our ecommerce fulfillment pricing itemizes surcharge lines instead of blending them into a handling fee, which is the only way you will see any of this on an invoice. More on the central Ohio position if you want the distance map.
Separately, the import demand surcharges we covered Friday took effect today.
FAQ
Does the 5.9% apply to my negotiated rates?
Not directly. The increase lands on standard list rates. If your discounts are written as a percentage off list, your invoice still moves, because the list price underneath moved. Flat negotiated rates behave differently. Read your agreement before assuming you are covered.
When does UPS announce its 2027 increase?
UPS has not posted 2027 rates as of today. In recent years UPS has followed FedEx within several weeks and matched the headline percentage. Treat 5.9% as the working assumption for both until UPS publishes.
Will the zone reclassification help or hurt us?
It depends on which ZIP pairs move, and FedEx has not published them. Nobody can answer this yet, which is why February 1 belongs on your calendar rather than in your forecast.
What should we do first?
Total the accessorial lines on one week of invoices. That single number tells you whether this announcement is a rounding error for you or a real budget problem. Send it over and we will run the 2027 sheet against it.
